In a previous article on the Moon and Our Spiritual Cycles, we scratched the surface of why our celestial satellite is important to us, why we might pay heed to it and a few hints for how to do so – but many questions remain unanswered. Why is the Moon so important to spirituality? And how exactly can we tailor our spiritual practices to reflect, honour and benefit from it? In this post, we aim to answer those questions.
Does the Moon Have Spiritual Significance?
It is without question that the moon has great spiritual significance, even if we sometimes don’t realise it. The first hunter-gatherers looked skyward with reverence, seeing the patterns that connected the moon to the world around them, and to their own spirits and bodies.
With the cycles of the moon came the cycles of nature, sacred patterns that express themselves not only in the obvious signs like the tides of the sea, but in more subtle ways – in plants seeding at the full moon, humans and animals ovulating and creating new life below the full moon’s light, and the withdrawal and obscuration of the spirit when the moon’s light fades, drawing us within, to sleep and be renewed. So close to nature, living as an undivided part of the natural ecosystem, ancient man could not help but see and honour these cycles, but even in the modern hyper-connected world, when we open our eyes, we see them all around us.
Take a moment to write a journal, even if only one sentence to describe your day, and the patterns will emerge – you will see your spirit growing strong, cresting the wave, reducing and withdrawing, only to begin to grow anew with the patterns of our celestial neighbour. Without a healthy spiritual outlet for the surging spiritual energy, many people become out of sorts around the full moon, without really knowing why – and some even struggle with this unused energy to the extent that they experience. To direct this energy towards growth and happiness, we should honour the Moon in our spiritual practice and pay attention to its cycles, taking advantage of the changes in ourselves during the lunar cycle to affect change in our own lives and live more fully in concert with Nature.
How Does the Moon Affect Life?
Biological cycles have been tied to the Moon since life was first created, bringing changes with the tides. Birds orient their migration with the moon, fish swim upstream or spawn beneath the full moon’s light, and night-time predators like cats and owls are at their most powerful during the New Moon.
Beneath the ethereal glow of the Full Moon, forests breathe out their pollen and release their seeds, and the rise and fall of the tides nourishes living beings both in the ocean and upon the land. While perceptive vets and animal handlers have reported that animals become more unruly and agitated beneath the Full Moon, it is due to the wildness of spirit and energy created by the Moon at the height of its phases – something which is neither innately good nor bad. It is simply a force of Nature.
Does the Moon Have Any Effect on Human Beings?
It would be incredibly remiss of us to believe that something which affects every aspect of nature would fail to affect us. Just like the animals and plants of the natural world, the lunar cycle affects our lives. In the past, when our connection to the natural world and to our own souls was stronger, we recognised the changes brought by the waxing and waning of the lunar sphere, honouring them, but today, in a hyper-profane world, most people are completely unaware of the power of the moon, or what to do with that power. Is it any wonder that, with no spiritual outlet, hospitals and police forces see increases in incidents at the time of the full moon? Instead of working with the natural effects of the moon, most people ignore them completely, leading to all kinds of problems.
When we recognise the changes wrought by the lunar cycle, we can begin to synchronise our lives with them again, as we were originally meant to, and we will see the cycle as a blessing and a strengthening influence, not a problem!
Why Was the Moon Worshipped?
The Moon has been venerated by many different human cultures throughout history, from the Greek Goddess Selene to the Irish Elatha and Mani of the Pagan Norse faiths. Beautiful, ethereal and enchanting, the Moon stirs something pure and real within each of us, so it isn’t hard to see how it became known as something deserving of worship.
The Moon’s effects on us were once widely known throughout society, and its blessings sought-after by the wise and knowledgeable. By offering prayers and devotions to the moon gods and goddesses, different peoples across the world honoured the ancient natural cycles of the world, and became one with them. The spiritual energy and natural tides became their allies, and brought them new life, growth and peace.
How Can I Include the Moon into My Spiritual Practice?
If you want to flow with the tide, and make the most of the natural changes that are brought each month by the Moon’s cycles, then there are many ways in which you can incorporate the moon into your spiritual practices. Some great ways to include the Moon’s cycles in your life are:
At the Modern Mystery School, we have passed down the knowledge in an unbroken lineage since the time of King Salomon. We teach our students of the importance of the Moon to our natural spiritual cycles, and our Moon Ceremonies help to bring people into sync with the natural cycle of the world.
Moon meditation doesn’t need to be an intensive, complicated affair – it can be as simple as opening the curtains to allow the full moon to be seen while you take a moment to yourself, to reconnect to your spirit and breathe in the nourishing light of the moon – but when you do it, you are becoming empowered by the beautiful, otherworldly light, embracing the cycles that have affected all life since time immemorial. Moon Meditation with the Modern Mystery School gives you the tools you need to align yourself with the natural patterns of life, empowering you to live the life you want!
Take in the Moon’s Light
Whether you’re just reading by the window and letting the Moon’s light shine onto you or going for a walk under the full moon, a peaceful and beautiful way to connect to this ethereal force is in simply letting the rays fall on your skin. Take a moment and enjoy the peace and serenity of the moon’s light, acknowledge the power it has, and let it refresh your soul – ready for rebirth at the time of the New Moon.
Connect with Nature
An even more primal way to connect to the moon is in experiencing Nature beneath its light. Go out and breathe the fresh air, listen to the sounds of the night, and look inward and outward, at the millions of people throughout all of time who stood in your place, one with the world. The Moon shines on you as it shone on them, as it will shine on others after we are gone.
Use the Moon to Establish Cycles in Your Own Life
The cycles of nature shown by the Moon don’t just buffet us like waves pushing a ship – they are there for us to learn from and listen to, connecting us to the cycles of nature. The New Moon is a perfect time to look inwards and set goals for yourself, taking advantage of the renewal in the natural world and of our own spirits, while the growing moon, waxing towards full, empowers us and helps us to achieve our aims.
Honour Your Feminine Energies
Associated since the beginning of time with Goddesses and Feminine Energy, the Moon’s light can be a perfect catalyst for us to give thanks for the women in our life, and honour the feminine energy in ourselves – whether we are women or not. A crucial part of all of us, our feminine energies empower us in a huge variety of ways, while the women in our lives have been instrumental in the people we have grown into. Both deserve our love and our respect; and there is no better opportunity than beneath the gentle rays of the first Goddess – the moon.
