Since the dawn of time, humankind has felt an incredible pull from the moon, connecting us to the natural cycles of the Earth and its celestial satellite. As the moon waned and vanished from the sky, people from all faiths and cultures felt themselves withdrawing, only to be reborn stronger and more vitally alive when the full moon returned to bathe them in its ethereal light.
At the Modern Mystery School, we understand that this isn’t just coincidence – but something that we as a species have known since time immemorial: we are linked to the Moon, just as it is linked to us.
The phases of the moon help to orient us, and we celebrate this with Full Moon Ceremonies and recognition of the effects the phases have on us.
The New Moon begins the cycle, and gives us a clean start, a break from the past and a chance to realign ourselves to face the new dawn. The darkness is a moment of rebirth and new opportunity, before the moon returns to us.
The Waxing Moon is growing and increasing in strength, and its light helps us to do the same, encouraging new growth and development as its light nourishes our spirits and helps us to work towards our full potential.
The Full Moon is the time of high tide for our power, spiritual energy and life. Our strength peaks in its light, and we can access new heights of capability and creativity. At the same time, however, the Full Moon as the high point means that it is also the tipping point into waning, and so it is a time to let go of that which no longer helps us, and use its strength to help us defeat those things that are holding us back and damaging our potential. Once we have overcome them and let them go, we are ready to enter the waning phase of the moon, renewed.
The Waning Moon is a time of winnowing, where our energy and creativity naturally flows back to its source and the moon encourages us to withdraw and prepare for the coming Dark Moon.
The Dark Moon (or New Moon) is a time of introspection and solitude. The night is dark, but this dark isn’t evil – it is the dark in which we rest, sleep and are reborn, and the darkness in which we can think clearly and see the solutions to problems and the true nature of ourselves and others. Sometimes, it is in the darkness that we can see most clearly.
During the different phases of the moon, you can honour these changes in yourself by attending our Full Moon Ceremonies, or practicing Moon Meditation. Moon Meditation doesn’t need to be a complex, intensive ritual – it can be very simple and easy to do! Simply find a place of peace and quiet, either alone or with a trusted friend or someone who also wants to find peace in the moon’s light. If you want, you may wish to light a candle or burn a little incense to help focus your mind and create a spiritual anchor while you meditate, and consider your life and yourself. What is it that you would like to become? What do you want to let go of? Who do you want to be?
In the light of the moon, you will feel a deeper connection than ever before to the world around you, and you will be ready to make a change to your life.
